HA NOI (VNS)— Vo Van Tuan claimed the yellow jersey yesterday for the third stage of the HCM City Television Cycling Cup, ahead of today’s 190km stage – the longest of the tournament.
Tuan of Ben Tre won the 140km stage that started in Thanh Hoa Province and ended in Vinh City with a time of 3hr 19.27min.
The third stage saw a number of cyclists making attacks to break from the other riders, which left the peloton divided into six groups and pushed up the overall speed of the tour.
With the strongest riders keeping eyes on their rivals, Tuan and five other participants grasped the opportunity to separate away from the group at the 120km mark.
Tuan won by a narrow margin in the last seconds to the runners-up Tran Nguyen Minh Tri of Dong Thap Raflis Trivialis and Tran Thanh Dien of Sai Gon Plant Protection. Winning the stage meant Huynh Thanh Tung of Military Zone 7 had to relinquish the yellow jersey with Tuan posting an overall time of 7:50.48. Tri finished two seconds slower in second with Dien finshing third, six seconds behind.
Despite losing the leading position Tung still maintained his green jersey for the best rider, having pocketed 31 points. With the three racers finshing the stage in the top ten, they helped their teams gain more points, as Sai Gon Plant Protection jumped to the top of the team rankings a with a result of 23:33.03. Dong Thap Raflis Trivialis and Military Zone 7 were second and third, respectively.
In the fourth stage today, from Vinh to Dong Hoi City of Quang Binh Province, riders are given the chance to take the mountains classification’s red jersey with Ngang Pass posing the first challenge for the best rider of the mountain. The 2000km event will finish on April 30 in HCM City. — VNS
